This chart shows the chords of every major and minor key, organized by scale degree. It’s the starting point I use to explain harmony and chord progressions — and, judging by more than 30,000 downloads, it has been useful to a lot of people.

How to read the chart
The Roman numerals at the top show the degree of each chord within the key. Pick a key in the left column and read across: for example, the progression I – VI – IV – V in the key of C gives C – Am – F – G.
How to practice
- Pick a progression and play it in several keys.
- Try different rhythms and picking patterns with the same chords.
- Find out which songs use each progression: Hooktheory shows hundreds of examples.
