“Foi Deus” (“It Was God”), written by Alberto Janes, is one of the fados made immortal by the voice of Amália Rodrigues, Portugal’s greatest fado singer. This is my own adaptation for classical guitar, based on the excellent arrangement by Silvestre Fonseca, one of the great masters of the classical guitar. It’s a threefold tribute: to the composer, the singer and the arranger.
Above you’ll find the free PDF with standard notation and tablature. If you’d prefer the Guitar Pro version, write to me and I’ll send it to you.
Listen and watch
Before you start, it’s worth hearing how it sounds:
Practice tip
In fado, the melody breathes like the voice of the person singing it. Listen to Amália’s version and try to imitate those pauses and that phrasing on the guitar: that’s what gives the arrangement its soul, more than playing every note at the right speed.
