“A Portuguesa”, with music by Alfredo Keil and lyrics by Henrique Lopes de Mendonça, has been Portugal’s national anthem since 1911. This instrumental version for electric guitar is an adaptation by guitarist Jimmy Oliveira, to whom I send my congratulations. So that anyone can learn it, I transcribed it as tab and created a backing track for you to play over.

Practice tip
Learn the melody first without the backing track, slowly, until you know it by heart. Only then play over the track. Record yourself and listen carefully: it’s the fastest way to find out whether you’re locked in with the tempo and whether the long notes ring all the way through.
